Although it’s still beautiful out right now, we all know that October can often bring some pretty unpredictable weather and freezing temperatures, so now is the perfect time to make preparations for the coming season.
In order to get ahead of the game, we recommend that you call before the end of the month to make your sprinkler winterization appointment. It is a very important thing to do when you have a sprinkler system because when the ground freezes, any water left in your irrigation system can cause all kinds of damage, including bursting pipes and damaged backflow assemblies. This can result in costly repairs — not to mention a flooded lawn — come spring. If you have an above-ground backflow preventer like the one pictured to the right, there is a higher risk of freezing earlier in the season, so be sure to make your appointment without procrastination. To take extra precaution, you can buy backflow insulator bags like these.
While you’re at Home Depot or on Amazon, you may want to buy some outdoor faucet protectors like these as well as other items to prepare for winter like a snow shovel or ice melt before they become such a hot commodity in the middle of a storm. It’s also a great time to buy a new humidifier filter, furnace filter, and attic fan cover if necessary.
Before the extreme cold hits us, now is the perfect time to have your HVAC serviced. Once you’re completely done with yard watering for the season, don’t forget to detach your hoses from the faucets and store for the winter. You’ll also want to change the direction of your ceiling fans and if you have an older ventilation system, you may need to adjust your dampers.
As always, if you have any house-related questions or need any recommendations for service providers, don’t ever hesitate to call. We are your home resource for the long haul!
