What’s Up, Kansas City! School is almost out and summer is around the corner, but if you just can’t wait to start having fun in the sun then we’ve got you covered. This weekend is all about having fun with the family!
On Friday, May 16, head to Wyandotte County Lake Park for the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Wyco Lake Dog Park. The celebration will take place near Shelter 16 and the archery range from 3:00 to 4:00 PM. Bring your four-legged friends and help celebrate this new space designed just for them.
Saturday, May 17, offers a full slate of events for all kinds of interests. Music lovers can spend the day at Washington Square Park for the KC Folk Fest. The festival runs from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM and features performances across four stages. Expect to hear everything from chamber folk and old-time to blues, hip hop, and singer-songwriters. The event is free and includes food trucks and a craft market featuring local vendors.
For a fun community celebration, the Turkey Creek Festival takes place from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM in Merriam's Antioch Park. This free event includes live music, a 5K walk/run, food trucks, and a wide variety of kids’ activities. Be sure to check out the Creek Chic Arts and Crafts Market, where you’ll find handmade goods, vintage finds, and upcycled treasures.
If your weekend plans call for something sweet, Lenexa’s Ice Cream Social is happening from 2:30 to 4:00 PM at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park. Swing by the gazebo near Rose’s Pond to enjoy ice cream and live music from the Fine & Dandy band. It’s a great way to slow down and savor a simple afternoon.
For a more magical evening, Zona Rosa will be showing Wicked as part of its Summer Movies in the Park series. The movie will start at dusk—around 8:45 PM—so bring a blanket or lawn chair and settle in for a night under the stars. Snacks are welcome, and the event is free to attend.
Finally, for families with little ones or transportation enthusiasts, Truck 'N Train Day at the Kansas City Northern Railroad is a must. The truck displays will run from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, and the miniature train rides will operate from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Located at 6060 NW Waukomis Drive, this event offers a unique blend of hands-on fun and nostalgia—and it’s also free.
